WINDSOR

WINDSOR – THE QUEEN'S HOLIDAY GETAWAY

My brother Chong's family moved into Windsor town in January 2018.
As I was invited to visit his new home – I made a visit in November 2018 – for seven weeks.

This was not my first time in Windsor – as I have been here a total of five times before - whenever I was visiting England.

To the locals, Windsor is a “must visit” royal town – where one can visit the Windsor Castle, heritage shops, River Thames' swan and the Eton town.

IMPRESSIVE WINDSOR CASTLE AT ROYAL TOWN

Windsor is situated 21 miles West London, which has royal connections over 900 years ago.

The town is dominated by massive bulk of Windsor Castle, which has been a popular retreat for the royal family. The first wooden, castle was built in 1066 by William I, and over the centuries many monarchs have rebuild and added to it. The “Medieval” appearance of the castle today is the result of George IV's restoration carried out by Jeffrey Wyatville. It is still used as a residence, so that access to parts of the castle may be restricted. Visitors are encouraged to visit the castle if they stop over in Windsor – to see the interior of the castle such as St George's Chapel (1478), Henry VIII tomb under the Choir, paintings and fine furniture in State Apartments, King's Dining Room, Queen Mary's Dolls' House (1923).

If you are lucky – you can come across the impressive Garter Ceremony takes place each year in June – outside the castle.

Besides castle, visitor can walk around the Queen's town – cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and mall.

A REPLICA LOCOMOTIVE GWR

The Locomotive is a replica of Great Western Railway - Achilles Class 4-2-2 No. 3041 (18940) named Emilyn after the Lord Emilyn chairman of GWR company. Repainted in 1897 - the train is 57 feet long and renamed as The Queen to pull six new carriages of Royal Train. Renamed James Mason withdrawn from service in 1912. It is located in one of the shopping mall, next to MRT Station Windsor.

MY FAVORITE SOUVENIR SHOP

The Tree Tuns (2010) is the earliest surviving building connected with the government of Windsor built in 1518 for the Trinity Guild which since 13th century have provided the governing body for the town. It was alternatively known as Guildhall as the town hall the building of present Guildhall. In 17th Century, it is also known as an inn as it still is, and was once leased to a Mayor of Windsor. Later, the building was taken over by Prince Harry Pub in 2018.

Crossing the River Thames by Windsor Bridge is a town called Eton, with many attractive period houses in its main street. It is, of course, best known for its public school, Eton College (1440) founded by Henry VI. Eton college is one of the oldest schools in the country - the historical building of this Foundation are an integral part of the heritage of the British Isles - a place visitor can share he beauty and traditions of the College.

Lastly a must not miss place is the feeding of swans at the River Thames by Windsor, here.
