ANTHERTON

ANTHERTON

On 19 July 2007 – visited only once the place called Antherton – about 30 minutes from Preston to visit my cousin sister Dene Bone, who runs a cafe business.

We dropped by at her cafe – to catch up with her – as she served us with a delicious home-cooked lunch.

As our trip was shortened due to a continuance drive to Manchester, I did not get to visit the town.

ANTHERTON

Antherton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Great Manchester, England and historically was a part of Lancashire. The town was associated with coal mining and nail manufacture from the 14th century, encouraged by outcropping coal seams. At the 20th century the town was described as “the centre of a district of collieries, cotton mills and iron-works, which cover the surface of the country with their inartistic buildings, and are linked with by the unlovely dwellings of the people. It's last coal mine closed in 1966, and the last working cotton mills in 1999.

Today, the town is the third largest retail centre in the Borough of Wigan, almost 20% of those employed in the area work in the wholesale and retail trades, there is still some manufacturing industry, here
