SAINT
OMER & DESVERS
A
trip to St Omer is rather unusual as I get to go over to France via a
ferry from Calais Port.
Other
than St Omer, the other French city I have visited is Paris.
Upon
reaching St Omer – we were given two hours to walk around the rural
France by our coach driver.
What
I like of St Omer is the main square – where the town hall is, and
the many shops, restaurants and cafe are located, here.
TOWN HALL IN ST OMER |
The
town has wide streets and spacious square in the town centre.
St
Omer is a commune in France. It is a commune and sub-prefecture of
the Pas-de-Calais department, west-nothwest of Lille on the railway
to Calais.
The
town is named after Saint Audomar, who brought Christianity to the
town.
ST OMER SQUARE |
The
chief statue in the town is that of Jacquelin Robin, who in 1711
helped the town resist a siege by Marlborough and Prince Eugene of
Savoy.
Attractions
include the Saint-Omer Cathedral, Audruicq Market, Ruines de l'Abbage
Saint-Bertin, Musee de I'hotel Sandelin and the Town Hall.
Our
tour also include a neighboring place called Desvres whereby we
stopped for another two hours walk around and get to know this little
town.
Desvres
is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France.
It
is a market town, known for its pottery.
PORCELAIN DISPLAY IN DESVRES |
Here,
I took a stroll down the town and explore the many small shops –
and see the handiwork of locals working on pottery. I also bought
myself an miniature angel handmade by the locals, here.
