HERITAGE
RICHMOND
Richmond
is the area of the “rich” - I have been there for almost five
times when I am in England.
Richmond
is a town rich in history from the ancient Green with the 18th
century houses and remains of a Tudor Palace, along the Thames
towpath past charming cottages and a waterside inn to the Georgian
Bridge.
It
is interesting to try out the Victorian walk – where one can feel
the bygone age of cobbled streets, gaslight and a picture of Richmond
in Queen Victoria's reign.
Richmond
is also home to famous writers namely George Elliot and Virginia
Woolf.
A
walk along Historic Richmond and Richmond Hill, including the Terrace
Gardens and Riverside of Richmond Upon Thames, is very memorable.
I
never missed walking up the sloppy Richmond Hill - just to enjoy “the
view” and the Terrace Gardens which served a strategic area for
photography session.
TERRACE GARDENS |
Here,
at the riverside, I really enjoy the wide range of boats, to discover
the boat makers lifestyle and enjoy the sightings of swan.
RIVERSIDE |
So
far, I have attempted to take a long stroll along the riverside to
see the Orlean House – Marble Hill House & Rock – which are
located in between Richmond and Twickenham.
The
Orlean House and the Octagon Room – in the early 18th
century James Johnston (1643-1737), the secretary of State for
Scotland acquired a stretch of land beside the Thames at Twickenham
on which he build his house upon his retirement from public life. He
commissioned John James (1672-1746) to design his new home which was
completed in 1710 and described as “regular and commodious”. It
was a rectangular brick building with a flat facade and a central
feature in Portland stone.
ORLEAN HOUSE |
Marble
Hill house is a lovely Palladian villa set on 66 acres of riverside
parkland.
Other
than sightseeing – Richmond has the finest bars, restaurants,
hotels, B&Bs and shops.
Most
retail shops here offered branded goods ranging from clothing, shoes,
toys and health product among others.
I
always look forward to get some branded products which can be found
in Richmond shopping areas such as timberland shoes.
Richmond
heritage sight include Hampton Court Palace, Ham House, Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, Chiswick House, Syon House and Osterley Park and House.
