TALK ON THE NEEDHAM PUZZLE AND CHINESE MODERNITY

IPOH: There will be a talk by Tan Sri Andrew Sheng on “The Needham Puzzle and Chinese Modernity: Pro Ho Peng Yoke – The Sinologist” organized by Perak Academy.

The talk via zoom will be held on March 29 (Monday) at 8.30pm.

Professor Ho Peng Yoke (1926 – 2014) was an Ipoh boy who studied at St. Michael’s Institution and rose to be the first director of the Needham Research Centre, Cambridge University.

The Needham Puzzle arose from Cambridge University Press’s monumental seven-volume involving 27 books, “Science and Civilisation in China” on why China did not have her Industrial Revolution ahead of Europe.  Joseph Needham (1900 – 1995) was the Sinologist who initiated and edited the series.

The Lecture explores the search for Chinese modernity and how Malaysian’s contributed to that discourse.
