LION HEAD AND DRAGON IN THE MAKING

 

IPOH: Lion head maker Teh Wing Liang is seen busy putting the finishing touch to a lion head, at his Taman Melor shop house.

Teh, 46, a proprietor of Zhong Shen Trading specialized in making lion head, dragon, snake and mosquito, using bamboo and papier-mache.

He started the business way back in 1996, out of interest in art and culture related matters. His interest in the subject encouraged him to self-study how to make the paper mache objects.

Teh said that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, which follows with MCO, CMCO, RMCO, people still make order for the lion head and dragon, however there was a dropped of 48% sales compared to less CNY season.

“There are orders coming from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, and some orders are exported to Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“The duration of making one lion head takes about four days while the dragon may take one week,” he said.
