TAIPING & SEPETANG

TAIPING & SEPETANG

Taiping is the town of my paternal family, where my father was born.

I used to visit Taiping during my younger days – for sightseeing and food.

Taiping is a town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak, Malaysia – approximately 45 minutes drive from Ipoh.

It is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh.

Taiping is ranked Top 3 Sustainable Cities in the World, last year.

Taiping town has won the hearts of many first time tourists here.

There are many attractions such as - Taiping Zoo, Taiping Lake Gardens, Bukit Larut, Burmese Pool, Aun Tong Coffee Mill, Perak Museum, Taiping War Cemetery and the Prison.

TAIPING LAKE

Besides Taiping, I also frequented Sepetang which is a coastal town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak.

It takes about 30 minutes drive from Taiping to Sepetang.

My frequent visit to Sepetang is because I have a group of relatives whose livelihood are fishermen and tourist guide, living here. They are my maternal relatives – my mother's eldest sister's (Tuai Ee) descendant are living here.

SEPETANG

Also known as Port Well after a former Governor, Frederick Weld. It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community which specialises in fish breeding in cages. One can also walk around the village, one can see cockles breeding which is an important trading, here.

A WINDOW OF BEAUTY IN A FISHING VILLAGE - SEPETANG

The Port Weld railway station was located at the town centre – the whole railway line from Sepetang to Taiping – was the first railway line in the Peninsular, is now dismantled, and what is remain here is the Port Weld Railway Signboard.

SMOKY CHARCOAL KILNS

Kuala Sepetang is also well known for its mangrove swamp reserve park called
Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve which is open to the public daily.

Another interesting activity to mention is a visit to the charcoal kilns – which are open for tourist visits.

Obviously, seafood is a 'must' where one can just take a stroll along Sepetang and one will find many floating type of restaurants standing on stilts and overlooking the sea.

NGAH IBRAHIM MUSEUM

If you wish to know more about the town of Matang – drop over to Matang Historical Complex/Kota Ngah Ibrahim which was built by Che Ngah Ibrahim in 1857. Here, one can understand more about history related to Matang – there is a Si Larut Elephant, a fort, bedrooms and items used by Ngah Ibrahim.

Nearby, visitor can find the Long Jaafar mausoleum, attached with a signboard.

FIRE FLIES AT AMPUNG DEW

One can also end up the trip by going for a boat ride to view the fireflies (kelip kelip) at Kampung Dew, Sepetang .
