IPOH: The state government had plans to build a permanent centre for drifters (PPG) located at the Kinta Valley, next year.
State Women Development, Family, Social Welfare and NGO committee chairman Datuk Dr. Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin said that the government would make a survey on the construction of the drifter’s centre and to find a suitable location to house the homeless and drifters living in Kinta.
“Kinta Valley has the highest number of homeless and drifters followed with Taiping and Teluk Intan.
“As of June 5, July 10 and August 15, there were 63 drifters found on the streets during the ‘Save the Drifters Operation’ and they were sent-off to stay temporary at PPG, held in Red Crescent Society.
“During their stay at the PPG, they must undergo basis medical checkup including Covid-19 test, and they were taught how to take care of themselves as well as social interaction in the community.
“After 3.5 months living at the PPG, the drifters are now either send to live with relatives (13), social welfare homes (8), drug rehabilitation centre (10), died (3), free subject to warning (3) or job opportunities.
“The state government had utilized RM700,000 for the PPG temporary operation, and RM320,000 were used on workers daily allowance.
“In addition, the state government provided a one-off payment of RM200 per person to 110 permanent workers at the centre,” said Norashikin during the closing ceremony of the PPG today (July 15).
