PTA president Datuk Mohd. Odzman Abdul Kadir said the government is now preparing to open the economic doors and with social distancing, health and hygiene protocols in place, the foreseeable future of a revival in tourism activities will probably see a greater emphasis on family travel, smaller group travellers known to each other and a resurgence of single business travellers.

“Rebuilding tourism for the future by focusing on ‘domestic arrivals’ is of great importance although the sector remains highly unpredictable, we must be optimistic and ready.

DATUK MOHD ODZMAN ABDUL KADIR

“While the government and its tourism related agencies are taking impressive actions to restore and re-activate the sector while protecting jobs and businesses, industry players have to do their own part by not focusing on the effects of the pandemic but look at what needs to be done as the sector partially reopens to full recovery, hopefully in 2023.

“To minimize the impact of the pandemic, industry player must work with the relevant authorities to ensure all safety guidelines are followed with the key priorities to promote SOP compliance for domestic tourism include restoring traveller confidence; corelating activities between authorities, industry players and NGOs; digital transmission of updated information every 24 hours for tourists’ access and documenting vaccinated staff, and for those who are not, immediate arrangement to be made for them and family members to be vaccinated.

He added that with travel restrictions lifted, main stumbling block would be ‘Fear of Infection’ and steps must be taken to reduce the impact of ‘Fear’ in people to encourage safe travel.

“The local authorities must make sure that all tourism sectors comply with SOP with regular monitoring and blacklisting of rule-breakers must be done.

“MOTAC and Tourism Perak must jointly introduce a ‘Compliance Certification’ to be placed next to the MySejatera QR Code for tourists and public to view. The certificate will denote that the operator is ‘Certified Save to Visit’.

“Finally, formulate a ‘Perak is Your Safe Preferred Destination’ awareness campaign, and share the campaign rollout plans and strategies with stakeholders to maximise impact,” said Odzman.
