IPOH: The Rotary Club of Greentown (RCG) launched its Virtual Forest & Multisensory & Motor Stimulation Facility via a zoom meet, here.
Sponsored by The Rotary Foundation’s Global Grant program, the Multisensory & Motor Stimulation outdoor facility using horticulture therapy at BebeLEC Day Centre is the first of its kind in Malaysia, initiated by RCG in 2018/2019.
The event was launched by District Governor Teoh Kwan Swee.
Project organizing chairman Francis Vijeyaselvan said that the design-scape of this facility caters for people with dementia at each stage of their ailment.
“It provides therapy ranging from physical exercise to mental equilibrium. The atmosphere triggers happy past memories thus minimizing bouts of frustration and agitation.
“Potting and planting activities help regulate body movement and perpetuate muscle strength. The quintessence of the horticulture concept-design invokes, stimulates and sensitises the five senses.
“The fence-encapsulated facility is an obstruction free quasicircular path designed to prevent digression, reduce confusion and curtail apprehension.
“There are the Hanging Garden, Bamboo Grove, Water Fountain, Potting Beds and Vegetable Patches and Koi Pond, whereby each feature will assist the dementia patient to improve their memory.
“Lastly, the Virtual Forest is a virtual environment designed to give back control to users. Engaging with The Virtual Forest is empowering for the person with dementia as it gives them an element of control at a time in their life when so many choices are beyond their control,” he said.
