CONTROVERSIAL OVER IPOH PADANG

 

IPOH: The Perak State Government has come to know that the community in Ipoh City is not comfortable with the renovation and construction works going on in Ipoh Padang.

It came about where 130 Ipoh folks voiced out their grievances over the execution of the light and sound project at Ipoh Padang, a few days back. 


 


 

The group was against the upgrading works going on here, as it will destroy the heritage site of Ipoh Padang which is popular for its greenery, sports and a training ground for cricket players.

The Light and Sound project will be funded and developed by the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) followed with attractive lighting including water features, costing about RM3 million while a further allocation of RM6 million to upgrade the Kinta Riverfront.

As such, State Housing, Local Government, Public Transportation & Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Norlee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi and Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud made a visit to Ipoh Padang to check on the ongoing upgrading site as well as attended an exhibition, here.

 


 

Norlee told the press members that the Light and Sound project was an initiative by the Perak State government to add-on as a tourist attraction with the cooperation from NCIA.

“Currently, the Ipoh Padang is undergoing the first layering works for its Projection Mapping System, which involves the upgrading of control rooms, public utilities, plaza, pavilion and landscape of the area.

“Meanwhile, the renovation work held at Kinta Riverfront involves renovating the shops, two steel bridge units, public toilets, sidewalk, landscape and lighting.

“Both of the projects are estimated to be ready by January, next year”, she said.


 


 She added that the construction and renovation works would not destroy the trees or caused any changes to the original structure of the Ipoh Padang.

“The government is sensitive and always share the same aspiration with the people to conserve heritage value of the Ipoh Padang, which is part of the Ipoh Heritage Zone.

“We hope with the presence of the two projects, it will be able to attract more tourists and increase tourism revenue for the state.

“The state government welcomes non-governmental organization (NGO) to share our aspiration to improve domestic economy via tourism industry for the betterment of the businessmen/traders around the Ipoh Padang as well as Ipoh City,” she said.
