KUANTAN
A
friend volunteered to take us along to Kuantan, and we just followed
along.
It
was a fun filled holiday for us, where we took leisure drive passed
villages and beach side, pop into two hotels and visited Sungai
Lembing.

EL
DORADO of the East. That's the nickname given to Sungai Lembing, a
sleepy hollow which took 45 minutes drive from Kuantan. It earned the
name due to the westerners' involvement in tin mining activities some
100 years ago. The place has a record of sorts for its is home to the
largest. Longest and deepest underground tin mine in the world.
The
museum which is a must visit place in town, tells the story of how Sg
Lembing was once the richest tin mining area in Pahang in early 20th
century. Locals there prospered when they earned about RM1000 per
month. With that kind of money then, they could afford to purchase
British-made home products and furnishings.
Today,
if one will to walk along Sg Lembing – there are still some of the
town's old characteristic, such as houses and shop houses still
spotting a blend of the Pahang Malay traditional architecture with
western influence. Houses occupied by the tin miners are still
standing including 40 bungalows meant for the British officers. There
are now six hanging bridges in town, built for use during floods.
