LENGGONG

PRE HISTORIC LENGGONG

Lenggong is my maternal family home.

My mother lived there until she turned 18 years old, when she moved to Ipoh to work.

When I was young, I used to go back to Lenggong only on CNY, or any special occasion.

At that time, Lenggong is a small town – barely 20 shops – located in the main road, and is also known as a 'communist area' / black area in the 70s.

After the years gone by, I still visit Lenggong when I was assigned to cover story as a journalist. Another reason we visited Lenggong was when we were on our way to Bentong, Thailand.

However, I never knew that one day Lenggong Valley will be listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on June 30, 2012.

POSING WITH RELATIVES LEFT BEHIND IN LENGGONG

The town is situated 100km north of Ipoh on the Kuala Kangsar to Grik Road (Highway 76), and accessible by trunk road all the way to Lenggong.

Lenggong is a town, a Mukim and a parliamentary constituituency in Hulu Perak Distrcit, Perak, Malaysia.

The Lenggong valley in Hulu Perak is one of P. Malaysia's most important areas for archaeology, as excavations have revealed many traces of Malaysia's pre history. It is the site of the oldest known place of human activity, and it is still a rural area with many small villages and home stay surrounded by green vegetation and limestone hills.

PERAK HERITAGE SOCIETY MEMBERS TRIP TO LENGGONG

Lenggong can be likened to an open air museum and is home to legends, skeletons, cave drawings and precious finds such as jewellery, pottery, weapons and stone tools.

Many of the caves here, have revealed evidence of ancient humans having lived and hunted in this area.

If you are in Lenggong, do not missed the Lenggong Archaeological Museum where the Perak Man was display in a sacred area, here.

I have also attempted to explore the Gua Gunung Runtoh is located at Bukit Kepala Gajah, one of the eight limestones caves in Lenggong Valley. Excavations started in 1990 and uncovered evidence of Late Palaeolithic from 13,000 till 10,000, which may be the oldest cave site in Lenggong Valley.

Other popular caves include Gua Kajang, Gua Asar and Gua Badak.

Lenggong is also popular for seafood, fried fresh vegetables and wild animals (yei mei).
