IPOH: Some 80 contestants took part in the “2nd Joint Lantern Making” contest held at Ipoh Parade Shopping Mall, here.
The event was a joint effort of Ipoh Parade and the Lions
Clubs.

The nine clubs namely – Ipoh Centennial, Ipoh Central, Ipoh
City, Cameron Highlands Hillview, Kinta, Ipoh Mandarin, Ipoh Heritage, Ipoh
Athes and Ipoh Vintage.

There are three categories divided into On-site category (10 – 12 years old) followed with On-site Category B (13 – 15 years old) and Off-Site Category (all ages).

For category On-site A and B, the contestants had to create
their lanterns on the spot at Ipoh Parade.

As for category Off-Site, contestants are required to complete their lanterns at home before bringing to the mall for the contest.
The judging criteria are based on adherence to theme (25%),
creativity and originality (35%), size (10%), durability (10%) and aesthetic
(20%).

Ipoh Parade Advertising & Promotions Assistant manager Lim Huey Tyng said the annual lantern competition aimed to unleash creativity among participants by requiring them to utilize recycled materials in their creations.

“Participants use primarily recyclables such as toilet rolls,
plastic bottle containers, paper rolls, newspapers, straw, toys and sea shells
among others, for their creation.

“However, additional decorative which are not recyclables like
as button and sequins are permitted not constituting more than 30% of the
materials used to create the lantern,” she said.

Guest-of-honour was Nurmalis Musa who represented State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Norlee Ashkin Mohammed Radzi who was present to launch the event.
