COLOURFUL HATYAI
  

HATYAI is undoubtedly a popular nearby destination for Malaysians. 

Tourists flock to this southern Thailand town for its delicious food, spa and massage services, shopping and colourful sights.

There are many day tours to various attractions namely Great Brahma Shrine, Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaja, Goddess of Mercy and Hatyai Municipal Park which is located in a hilly area.

The park is full of beautiful flowering plants. There is an aviary, statutes of deities and food shops. At the foot of the hill is a statute of King Rama V and Brahman’s shrine is at the hilltop.

Do not miss the floating market where one can buy delicacies, souvenirs and fruit.
 
Visitors love to pose with or take pictures of the trader who are dressed in traditional attire.

Another market worth visiting is the market terrace where locals sell home cooked food, vegetables, handicraft, clothing and Thai laksa.

SONGKLA - one can take a 45-minute drive from Hatyai to view the Samila Beach.

Songkla Province boasts of beautiful beaches along rough seas with waves brushing aginst the rocks on the shores at Samila Beach.

The prominent landmark of Samila Beach is the Golden Mermaid Statue built in 1966 by Jitr Buabus, in response to the idea of the Mayor of Songkla Municipality Khun Charn Karchanakapun.

Other activities on the beach include - horse riding, flying kite, and purchasing souvenirs sold by the locals, here.

The Mermaid was the main character of Phra Apaimaanee, an Old Thai story written by Sconthorn Phu, the great poet of King Rama II.

Other interesting places to visit in Songkla are - National Museum, Songkla Zoo, City Pillar and Tinsulanonda Bridge.

FOOD - Thailand is popular for its spicy food cooked with a variety of herbs. Recommended dishes are sambal petai, oyster omelet, baked crab, milky glass noodle crab, tom yam soup (red or white), sweet-sour fish, cabbage fishball soup, fried fish with towfoo, fried kucai leaves and sliced mango dish. 

For the adventurous foodie - go for the fried chicken wings, fried baby chicken, fried baby pigeon, fried cockroaches, fried baby crabs and roasted cuttlefish sold by the roadside of Hatyai town centre.
