MANCHESTER

A FOOTBALL CITY CALLED MANCHESTER

I was introduced to Manchester City by my cousins and had been there four times in a row of ten years. Preston to Manchester takes only 30 minutes car ride.

MANCHESTER
I used to follow my cousin to Manchester for breakfast because they served the best Dim Sum, found in China Town.

MAJESTIC BUILDINGS IN MANCHESTER CITY

Also, shopping is plentiful in this football city namely Trafford Centre, Market Place Shopping center – to source for up and coming local designers clothing, wares and souvenir.

HERE I AM - CHINA TOWN

The largest shopping mall in Manchester is none other than Trafford Centre – which offer anything from gift items, souvenir, home and garden items, children, health care products and food outlets among others.

TRAFFORD CENTER

I am also amazed with the city transportation whereby tram is a common sight by-passing the city center. Another attraction, are the majestic red colour buildings surrounding the city areas.

CITY TRAM IS A COMMON SIGHT IN MANCHESTER CITY

Manchester City is well-known for battling for the world cup football competition. Its team entered the football leagues in 1899, and won their first major honour with the FA Cup in 1904.

It is also known as the “world's first industrialized city”, and its role in the industrial revolution is legendary.

Highlight places to visit are - Manchester United Football match at Old Trafford Stadium and Etihad Stadium tour, China Town, Walking City Tour, Cottonopolis Tour, Wine Tour and shopping.

IMPERSONATE YOURSELF AS A SINGER AT SHOPPING CENTER

Normally, I do not stay long in Manchester to discover the highlighted places because I followed my cousin's car just to drop by for a day visit.

LYTHAM ST ANNES

PEACEFUL LYTHAM ST ANNES

The first time I visited Lytham was when I was having a holiday in Preston, on 30 November, 2019.

I took a local bus from Preston Bus Station – which took about 45 minutes ride to this seaside resort.

Lytham, is actually a seaside resort on the Flyde coast of Lancashire England, south of Blackpool on the Ribble estuary.

It is a peaceful resort comprises of park and gardens and half-timbered houses.

Here, there are excellent shops, an attractive Promenade and of course, the best golf course in England.

Lytham is a wealthy area with residents' earnings among the highest in Northern England.

Highlight include historical places like Lytham Windmill and Lytham Hall, located at the coastal areas.

Lytham Windmill is a must visit place – forms as a museum hosts different exhibition displays organised by the Lytham Heritage Group.

BREEZY DAY POSING WITH THE WINDMILL

Meanwhile, the Lytham Hall is a historic house known as the “finest georgian house” in Lancashire. This house is a host to a courtyard, which acts as a tea room – booking for weddings.

The Green, a strip of grass running between the shore and the main coastal road, is a notable Lytham landmark – comprising of the windmill and Old Lifeboat House Museum. The Green overlooks the estuary of the River Ribble and the Welsh mountains.

Lytham was founded around 600 BC – the economy was dependent on fishing and shrimping, until the advent of tourism and seaside healthy cures.

Lytham is a location of the Foulnaze cockle fishery.

St Annes is only 30 minutes ride from Lytham – is also host miles of beautiful beach. It is quintessentially British, with everything from ice cream, vans to donkey rides. It is popular with its charming Victorian Pier and elegant parks and gardens. Unfortunately, I did not get to visit St Annes due to heavy rain - as our .
bus by-passed this place.

Lytham was founded around 600 BC – the economy was dependent on fishing and shrimping, until the advent of tourism and seaside healthy cures.

It is recommended a one-day tour is sufficient to visit Lytham St Annes.

LAKE DISTRICT

SWANZY LAKE DISTRICT

The Lake District is England's largest National Park and has inspired more poetry than any other area of English landscape.

Famous for its lakes, mountains and 19th century poets, the Lake District is the most visited National Park in United Kingdom.

The Lake District also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. It is associated with William Wordsworth and other Lake Poets and also with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin.

It is now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.

TOURIST FEEDING THE SWANS

The Lake District is a home to a variety of wildlife, due to its range of varied topography, lakes and forests – red squirrel, collonies of sundew and butterwort, golden eagles, endangered species of fish, and swans among others.

Highlight, is visiting the England's largest lake, Windermere to Bowness dubbed as World of Beatrix Potter attraction and lakeside walk.

BOATING ACTIVITIES AT WINDERMERE LAKE
Interestingly, visitors will come in hundreds daily to the Windermere Lake – to have a breather of the lake fresh air coupled with the presence of the thousands of swan around this area.

The Windermere Lake is definitely a stop over for me – to take photographs with the swans mingling around the lake areas.

HELLO MY FRIEND, MR SWANZY!

MORECAMBE

Hi! MR MORECAMBE

Morecambe is a coastal town on Morecambe Bay in Lancashire, England.

Eric Morecambe gives his name to Morecambe Bay, one of Britain's larges tidal areas. Excellent haven for wildlife, particularly birds.

Highlight is to take photograph with the statue of Eric Morecambe, one of Britain's best-loved entertainers of the 20th Century, which was enacted by Graham Ibbeson.

WRITER POSING WITH ERIC MORECAMBE

Obviously, I will not leave Morecambe without clicking at least a photograph with Mr Morecambe statue, here.

Visitors here, will enjoy a breezy walk along its 3.4 km long Promenade – just to enjoy the sea breeze, fabulous view across the bay to the Lake District fells, and some abandoned boat.

Across the beach, one can have a look at the splendid many hotels, art gallery, restaurants and shopping paradise.

UNUSUAL SIGHTINGS OF ABANDONED BOAT

A one-day trip is sufficient to tour the whole of Morecambe – with the main attraction being its Art Deco masterpiece and Eric's statue.

PRESTON

MY BELOVED PRESTON

My first trip to Preston was in August 2003, followed with subsequent trips in 2007, 2010, 2015 and 2018. My objective of visiting this small town called Preston was because my cousins (Hooi) are residents, here. Every visit to my cousin place is interesting – as I get to stay at my cousin's house while traveled to nearby places in Preston. Until December 2018, I was moved in to stay in my cousin's hostel – from November 26 until December 12, 2018.

PRESTON MARKET XMAS MOOD

The nearby places - about one hour to and fro Preston - are Blackpool, Morecambe, Lake District, LiverPool and Lytham.  On my separate three trips I had covered most of the above-mentioned places.

PRESTON TOWN CENTRE

During my two weeks stay here, I was able to do a research on Preston, whereby I took long walks to the town centre- where I found the “Preston Heritage Walk” which startsfrom Preston Town Hall – Preston Guild Hall – County Sessions House – Flag Market – Harris Museum & Art Gallery – Yates Jewelers – Miller Arcade – Minister of St John – Arkwright House – Stoneygate – Avenham Park – Com Exchange – Black Horse - Preston Market.

WRITER POSING AT THE FLAG MARKET AND CENOPATH

I attempted to see – Preston Town Hall, Preston Guild Hall, Sessions House, Flag Market, Cenopath, Harris Museum, Preston Market and the Minister of St John.

TOWN HALL

SESSIONS HOUSE

I started my trail at Preston Town Hall, Lancaster Road was designed by Sir Arnold Thornely and opened in 1933. The figures on the facade represent Henry II (who granted the first Charter to Preston), Health, Education and Trade.

Cross over to Preston Guild Hall, a theatre and concert hall built in 1972 to commemorate the Preston Guild Merchant.

Opposite the guild Hall stands the county Sessions House a Grade II listed building with Wren style tower. At the foot of the tower are the figures of Hercules and Minerva representing strength and wisdom (1903).

Make my way down Harris Street, opposite the Guild Hall towards the Flag Market, on the right is the cenotaph (1926).

Overlooking the Flag Market is the Harris Museum & Art Gallery. James Hibbert designed the magnificent Grade I listed building in 1892.

HARRIS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

The Preston Market was my usual place for lunch – opened in 1871, the Victorian roof canopy still protects the traders and remains one of Preston's finest Victorian structures. General market days – Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat. Flea market days are Tues/Thurs.

PRESTON MARKET

Preston is a city and administrative centre of Lancashire, England located on the north bank of river Ribble. It houses the main campus of the University of Central Lancashire and is home to Preston North End F.C., a founder of the football League and the first English football champions. Preston and its surrounding area have provided evidence of ancient Roman activity – in the form of a Roman road which led to a camp at Walton-le-Dale The Angles established Preston- its name derived from Old English meaning “priest's settlement” and in the Domesday Book recorded 'Prestune'. In the Middle Ages, Preston was a parish and township in the hundred of Amounderness and was granted a Guild Merchant charter in 1179; giving it the status of a market town. Preston was a boom town – textile manufacturing, engineering centre with large industrial plants.

WELCOME TO LLANDUDNO, WALES

Wales is a captivating country which boasts traditional seaside delights, soaring mountain ranges, a rich heritage packed with lyrical literature, myth and legend.

Without hesitation, I signed up for a 4D3N tour entitled “Llandudno Celebration at The Marine” - to experience Wales.

On the first day, I waste no time going for a walk on the most beautiful beach in Wales, endless photography shots, and keep on bumping into Alice in Wonderland character – in the form of wooden commemorate sculpture namely – the White Rabbit, Mostyn Gallery and author Lewis.

This little town is also home to Alice in Wonderland. Its author, Lewis Carroll was inspired by real Alice, Alice Liddell. The Liddell family first came to Llandudno in 1861 staying at the St Tudno Hotel. The like the area so much that they had a house built on the West Shore and Alice spend many childhood summers here. The family were friends with Charles Dodgson better known as Lewis Carroll.

Historically, the castle started in the 13th century, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, ruler of Gwynedd, refused to pay homage to Edward I of England, prompting the English conquest of Gwynedd. TAIWAN SMALL TOWN RAMBLE

TAIWAN SMALL TOWN RAMBLE

Taiwan is well-known for places – Kaohsiung (orchards), Taipeh (shopping), Tainan (historical) and the Alishan Mountain.

This island has become a popular holiday destination for Malaysian for the past few years.

Little did I know, that there are many hidden jewels in Taiwan's tourism industry, until I was invited for a 6D5N tour themed “Taiwan Small Town Ramble”, sponsored by Golden Century Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd, here.

The trip was organised solely for four bloggers from either personal blog or magazine blog.

During the almost one-week stay in Taiwan, I have got to know there are really hidden beauty of the many “small towns” in this country.

I believe there are much to offer in Taiwan after discovering these “unknown” inland areas, and these places need promotion to attract more tourists, here.

DAY 1

Our journey started from Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur-Taoyuan. We reached the City Suites Gateway Taoyuan, at about 7pm – ready for dinner, held at the city centre. The locals recommended me to try out the popular mee suah soup (flour vermicelli) dish that goes well with a bowl of tofu fah (beancurd dessert).

DAY 2

Our first stop was a visit to the a cultural village called the “Town of Wanderings” located in the old Guanxi Town, in Hsinchu County. We were allowed to spend one hour here, exploring the local Hakka culture and history, Japanese-built colonial architecture, cultural-creative houses in renovated old Chinese shop houses, and iconic eateries selling Hakka broad noddles, stinky tofu and grass jelly.
Something amazed me was the colorful cultural-creative houses found here whereby tourists would stop over to take photographs.

We also dropped by the Chocolate Hotel also known as “Schokolake Vacation House” for a brief outlook on what it has in store for tourists in this cute “all chocolate” decorated hotel. The owner even prepared a few popular dishes for food review by the media, including chicken chop and steak topped with chocolate flavor followed with chocolate cakes and drinks.

Next, was my favourite place named “Miaoli – Romantic Highway” where we had our 10-dish sumptuous lunch located at a hill side. After lunch, the restaurant owner led us to her orchard just opposite the restaurant to participate hands-on picking fruits such as strawberry, carrot, ginger, cherry and vegetables. I really have “fun” in this place, as I also participated in plucking a large white carrot for photography session.

After a heavy lunch, we proceeded to Sanwan Township Park, a new tourism product which has yet to be given a name by the government. Here, we were required to take a 20 minutes stroll to see a mass growth of the golden colored leaves tree named as 'bald cypress tree'. Tourists here, took photographs with the newly planted cypress trees, and also the presence of duck, swan, chicken and goose around the park. To me, this place looks more like a “farm”, where one can view all kinds of bird species, plants, flowers and trees.

SANWAN TOWNSHIP PARK

We then check into the Zhuo Ye Cottage located in the mountain area, at the Miaoli County. This cottage looks very traditional, peaceful and village-like atmosphere with the presence of chicken, duck, dogs and cats around the place. Later, we had our steam-boat dinner held at the cottage's restaurant.

Could not wait to view the Shen-Shing Station – a site of an old Japanese Colonial era train stop along the old North-South route to Kaohsiung was completed by 1908. Tourists were happy to see the old version of train exhibited in this station.

SHEN-SHING TRAIN STATION

In Shen-Shing, visitors are encouraged to walk the old cobbled streets, enjoy the beauty of traditional sight and enjoy authentic “local Hakka culture”, eat authentic food sell along the streets.

When afternoon comes, we adjourned to the most interesting outdoor place where we get a chance to pick oysters, organised by Wong Gong Picking Oysters. We took a rugged van out to the shore – to experience what it is like to pick oysters. The organisors had already tied up a row of oysters for the tourists to pick on it. There were a variety of activities for the tourists to indulge such as picking and tying up oysters found on a rope, a talk on oyster cultivation and methods to find oysters in the sea.

Another interesting place to visit is the “Lukang Culture Village” - where one gets to see the Old Streets of Taiwan comprises of old, tiny and abandoned kind of shops selling biscuits, souvenirs, toys and textiles, and the oldest Tin Hau Kong Temple.

TIN HAU KONG TEMPLE AT OLD STREET

A must not missed - is the Lukang Lung-Shan Temple, an awesome temple rich in history.
The temple was built in the late 18th century remains a showcase of southern temple design. Highlights include the front mountain gate (special bracketing system for Chinese architecture) and sweeping eaves, carved dragons (front of Hall of Five Gates), two fish curl each other (Yin Yang Symbol), and the resident deity Bodhisattva Guanyin. The temple's brackets and beams carved in symbol of clouds, dragons, bats, lions, melons, elephants, phoenixes and fish.

Get on a tricycle ride to visit the old streets namely Mo Ru Lane or Touch Breast Lane – where a man and a woman walk through this lane, they might touch each others' breast as the lane is too narrow. This so-called lane is a fire lane where it started once there is a fire hazard, and the people use these narrow fire lanes, along the stores to escape. The lane has air circulation and lights, and it forms an easier access to the larger streets. The lane is 70 cm at narrow west place.

A visit to Chiayi Bantaoyao Art Village was an eye-opener to me where I got to view numerous art pieces and ceramic products. The village was opened in 2005, located at boundary of Chiayi County and Yunlin County. The chairman, Jhong-Jhang Chen devoted himself to the art of cuting and pasting Koji Ceramic figurines, for some 30 years. DAY 5

The famous “Bopiliao” here I come!! The Bopiliao in Taipei City's Wanhua District comprises the area enclosed by Kangding Road, Guangzhou Street and Kunming Street. The neighbourhood around the intersection of Kangding Road and Guangzhou Street was formerly a major coal market and distribution point. This Coal Market was an important business district, and to this day one can admire a lot of Western-style architecture in this area. Historically, this place began almost 200 years ago, during the late Qing dynasty, and throughout Japanese colonial rule and later the Nationalist era.

A stroll down Bopiliao, one can view the various mural art, fast rickshaws (tricycle), walls of different surfaces (To-Ga wall/Wooden Plank Wall and Traditional Wall), tea house and Junks.
