IPOH: The Perak State Government had unveiled the newly refurbished Sultan Yussuf Roundabout Fountain, in conjunction with the Sultan of Perak’s birthday (November 6), here.
The fountain is dubbed as the “Iconic Ipoh City” product built in 1963, located strategically in the city, links four paramount roads - Jalan Sultan Nazrin Shah, Jalan Sultan Iskandar Shah, Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Raja Di Hilir.

Guests of honour who were present to launch the Fountain were – State Tourism Committee chairman Norlee Ashilin Mohamed Radzi, Mayor Datuk Bandar Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud, Weil Hotel chairman Datuk Liew Sew Yee and Weil Hotel executive director Liew Yu Wei.

Norlee Ashilin said that the refurbishment project included the upgrading of the fountain water spray function, adding on a Globe which lights up at night, and beautifying the landscape around it.
“The fountain project is a joint initiative by the Prime Minister Department (ICU) and the Weil Hotel which costs a total of RM400,000, for the whole upgrading work.

“The Prime Minister Department (ICU) has contributed RM200,000 while Weil Hotel spent RM200,000 for its project.
She said that there was a delay in the refurbishing work whereby the project was supposed to be completed on March 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will also be looking into the steps to make the area accessible for tourists to take photograph with the fountain, after discussion with our stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud said that the Ipoh City Council (MBI) would be carrying on renovation work (tar) of the roads on stages, from October 15 until end-November.

“It will involve 48 roads measuring a total length of 47 km, and as of date the council has covered 60.4 % (stage 1), and another 32.5% (stage 2) to complete it.
“The council will also be improving the roads around Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, as well as adding 200 parking lot which costs RM463,630.

“Another similar project, is located at Jalan Kompleks Sukan, Kampung Simee which involve expanding and dividing the roads, and adding street lights at a cost of RM442,964.
“The council has allocated RM409,000 for drainage purposes involving cleaning of drains in 21 identified location which covers 11.4 km, starting on November 2,” he said.

Datuk Liew Sew Yee said the refurbishing project was the hotel’s corporate social responsibility aimed to enrich our neighbourhood and enliven the historic landmark of Ipoh – the Fountain.
“There are two parts to the project focusing on the upgrading of the fountain while maintaining the iconic fountain monument and upgrading works on the surrounding landscape,” said Liew.
