MEMORY LANE REOPENS

IPOH – 18 JULY: Collectors of old items can now smile as the Memory Lane’s Flea Market will be open tomorrow (July 19) Sunday, after the closure of the market during Movement Control Order (MCO) in March.

The announcement was made by Ipoh City Council (MBI) Datuk Bandar Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @ Md Daud during a press conference at the meeting room.

Rumaizi said that the opening of the market will include Jalan Horley and Ladies Lane while Jalan Lim Boh Seng will still be closed.

“The procedure of the opening will start off with licensed trader holding odd numbers followed with even numbers traders next week – based on a week to week rotation.

“Some 60 stalls are allowed to open per weekend, and the standard operating procedure of social distancing of one-meter will be practiced by the traders, here.

“Before MCO, there are 300 stalls selling various items including antique merchandise, records, collectible items, homemade food, toys, pictures and photographs, stamps, coins and communications products.

“However, now traders are only allowed to sell collector items, secondhand goods, clothing, toys, accessories, electrical goods but not food items.

“The re-opening of the flea market aimed to assist the traders to return to normality, and boast up the economy and tourism industry in Ipoh”, he said.

Historically, the Memory Lane Flea Market was popularly known as “Thieves Market” which got its unsavoury name because it was assumed that the goods sold were stolen and re-sold to the traders who sells it to genuine buyers.

For someone who lost his shoes, this is a good place to get it back if he is lucky to find it here, and pay a sum for the trader.

The flea market was first set up in Jalan Bijeh Timah and later moved to Jalan Horley in 2003.

Tourism Malaysia Perak had inserted the flea market as one of the popular tourist destination into its Ipoh Valley of Paradise Travel Guide Book.
